Hi!

I screwed 2 Ikea Expedit desks to a shelf, each on the right and left side of an Ikea Expedit shelf. On the first evening in the newly set up study, I noticed how loud this desk is. When my girlfriend and I type on the keyboard at the same time, it sounds very loud. If you put down a glass, it sounds as if you are hammering a nail. I suspect that this strong noise is caused by the hollow construction and would like to insulate the desk a bit. Not only for me, but also because on the very first evening the neighbors stood at the door asking us to stop this noise. Is it possible to spray insulating foam into the desktop in an invisible spot, or would the wood not withstand the stress? I am also open to other ideas for soundproofing :) Thanks in advance for your answers.

hi...,

I think this will be extremely difficult with the insulating foam... since it is a closed honeycomb system. You would have to drill open each honeycomb and fill it... also, there would no longer be any warranty claim on this item... better and easier would be a thick desk pad.

best regards

A thick desk pad is on it now, but it doesn't really help. The thing has better acoustics than my sound system. It's a pity that the foam probably won't work out, so I guess only a new desk remains.
Thanks anyway for the quick response.

Already found an answer? The thread is a bit old... :D Have you ever attached felt pads to the bottom of the Expedit? Felt glides for furniture come in various sizes and shapes. Distribute several of these pieces evenly and that should decouple the floor.

Rubber mats under the keyboard should reduce the volume a little (they also minimize in computers that the vibrations from the hard drive are transferred to the case). But actually, the model is well suited as a desk because you shouldn't skimp on office furniture. But honestly? How do you type on the keyboard? Do you hammer on it with a hammer so that the neighbors are at the door right away? I only know that from music being too loud.

I would also go for rubber mats. You can remove them again, and they usually provide at least some relief. Let me know what you decided on and whether it helped.
