Hello everyone,

in the context of stair planning, the following question arises when building with a basement: In which direction should the staircase be placed?

1.) Staircase going towards the entrance door --> Basement stairs adjacent to the living-dining wall in the center of the plan. This would also allow for a straight staircase.
2.) Staircase in the center of the house adjacent to the living-dining wall --> Basement stairs going towards the entrance door.

Each solution has its advantages and disadvantages for me. Do you have any practical experience in this regard? Is there nowadays a standard?

The orange markings are intended to represent the basement stairs.

Thank you very much for your feedback in advance

Option two. Otherwise, you carry the dirt upstairs

I know variant 2 and would also prefer it. The further the staircase is from the entrance, the better I like it. Is it a closed or open staircase? With an open staircase, the entrance area probably also feels larger. Is there nothing on the right side? No guest toilet or other room?

I would prefer the straight and shortest path, with regard to shopping, furniture, etc. But if at the same time a staircase leads up, it would be given priority as the more comfortable way

Shopping is actually not carried upstairs but directly into the kitchen or the cellar. That would actually speak in favor of option 2, right? And you also don't carry furniture upstairs that often.

We tend to prefer an open stair. However, then the stairway down to the basement would also be open. We still don’t really know how it will look when you enter the house and have the open stairway right in front of you (about 1.50 meters away). Although a closed solution looks even worse visually if you have a basement door right at the entrance.

Option 1 has the advantage that you don’t have the basement stairway right in front of your nose. The disadvantage would be, however, that there is a risk of tracking dirt upstairs, and that you can’t just quickly go to the basement to get something from the pantry.
