So I also had to attach a longer cable (where the cable comes out behind the light it really has to be thin so that the lamp can still snap in afterwards).
For me it never "clicked" either and I had to exchange the lamp. I think some lamps have a manufacturing defect (although the Ikea salesperson told me that no one has ever complained). In any case, the exchange helped. With the second (same) lamp the snapping in worked. The adhesive strips are not really necessary. The bracket should be screwed to the wall (with anchors).
