How large can a single-pane window be?

Hello everyone.

Yesterday afternoon we had the conversation with our window installer, who was commissioned by the general contractor.

It is about a gallery window with the rough construction dimension width 201cm height 213.5cm.

The window is fixed glazed.

Allegedly, he cannot deliver the window in one piece, but only in two parts.

He justified this with a DIN, according to which a window may only be pressed in 8mm if there is wind in front of it, etc.

Is all this correct? Or does he simply not want to install such a large (and possibly heavy) window?

Maybe he really can't. At least you can order the window in the size you mentioned online or from hardware stores (also in even larger dimensions). Whether it is sensible or of good quality is another matter.

If you walk around with open eyes, you also see windows with dimensions of 5x5 m and larger...
The glass just has to be made thicker accordingly, 4mm probably won't work anymore then.

He is right, at least, that he is not allowed to install your window like that if it bulges too much. You shouldn’t insist on it either.

It is probably in 4-12-4-12-4 mm glazing. We had a similar case during the renovation of our windows next to the front door (there used to be a wall made of glass blocks). There we now have a fixed glazed pane measuring 2.10 * 2.30 m, made in 6-12-6-12-6 mm (12 mm is the distance between the panes).

By the way, these parts are extremely heavy and without a crane or a suitable lifting platform you won’t get them to the upper floor – you’ll also need the crane for installation.

The dimensions are really no big deal. That breaks every second glass package of a standard sliding door. Are you sure you are giving the reasoning correctly?

You write gallery. Is it perhaps rather about the fall protection, which could be made by means of a parapet?

A fall-through protection is not necessary unless you can jump 3m from the gallery into the window.

You can see the windows in question quite well in my profile picture. The upper middle ones!
