How can you recognize a good structural engineer?

Hello.

We have received an offer from the structural engineer frequently commissioned by the architect, which according to the architect is not exactly cheap. Due to full order books in this trade, the architect also believes that I probably wouldn't get a significantly better offer in this area.
Now I would like to get a few offers myself, they don't necessarily have to be from nearby.
Of course, I wonder how one can tell if it's a good structural engineer or if they will put in little effort. Otherwise, I can only decide based on price, which is not always ultimately the best...

Are there any indicators regarding this?

Thanks in advance.

Phew, how do you know that the offer is not affordable or does not meet the requirements? We have also relied on the team architect / structural engineer / (inspection structural engineer) / KfW expert here. There is so much to arrange, clarify, on a short communication path. I imagine that would be difficult if you bring someone unfamiliar on board. Of course, it's possible, but first you have to find someone and have time.

Hi,
just a stupid question: How much does a structural engineer cost? I would now expect something in the range of 1-2% of the construction sum, is that about right?

Regarding the question: it’s probably really difficult to bring in another structural engineer now. If he has already worked with your architect several times, many questions are already clarified and he might waive one or the other safety margin on ceiling or wall thicknesses because he can simply clarify things more precisely.
It doesn’t help you to save 1000 € on the structural engineer but then pay 2000 € more for a thicker ceiling.

The calculation methods are standardized and prescribed, but in borderline cases there can always be some room for discretion.

Best regards,

Andreas

I only have our net prices in mind right now, structural engineer 7,500 euros and checking structural engineer around 3,000 euros.

In this situation, I would also consider the architect. Rhineland greetings

Because the architect would then analogously be too expensive?
