We haven't done it like that before either, but with children the priorities change. They are happy about all kinds of lights. That's why there was a Christmas tree at our place for the first time last year.

In the end, everyone should do it the way they like. I also don't find all the string lights in the cities, this somewhat exaggerated "American" style, nice.
