That is annoying for you. We had contact with many builders. Either acquaintances or in various new development areas. We categorically excluded the general contractors with "mixed experiences." "Our general contractor" had consistently good reviews, so I consider the risk to be low.
I find that legitimate; you really can't do much more. Internet reviews should be taken with caution; many of them are fake. And asking for real experiences in your circle of friends and acquaintances is much more meaningful. I think that is already the lowest risk you can have. There are no guarantees in life, anywhere.
We did it the same way, with 2 known couples who built with our previous general contractor, and it was confirmed for us as well.
