Not only that, the generalizing term "lazy-minded craftsmen" is in itself disqualifying, disrespectful, and contradicts my experiences in construction. Of course, it helps to know that the craftsman is out once you start working on your own without consultation.

Where are the cracks supposed to come from?

If the wood cannot move freely in full extent — i.e., swell and shrink — cracks will occur. This happens due to the fibers being torn apart and cell collapse caused by compression damage. For a 25 cm wide step, dimension fluctuations of up to 7 mm can occur with oak. If the step is firmly installed during the heating period with relative humidity levels of 20-30%, the wood will swell considerably in summer when the room air humidity reaches 60-80%. The compression causes the cells to collapse, resulting first in microcracks and eventually fiber breakage. If the wood was not properly dried and stored before installation (a friend of a friend once ...), damage is unavoidable.

We are in a single-family house without large temperature fluctuations (19 to 23 degrees) and relatively constant humidity (30 to 60%). The wood may certainly "creak" sometimes, but no damage will occur there. However, it is important, and I agree with you, that the wood is dry during installation.

I’m going to take a big risk now and tell you as a trained carpenter with 20 years in property management, including monument conservation: single-family houses are not that climatically stable (unless you have museum-level air conditioning) that wood damage won’t occur.

And I would say nothing else either, screws!! You noticed that this peculiar decision led to problems back then. Therefore, I would refrain from repeating the same "mistake" only under optimized conditions. It remains wood, which simply does not bond optimally to metal. The risk remains.
