That is of course tragic. But here there is no split level, and one could also stay in the open space or install a ramp. One also has to keep things in perspective, otherwise I would recommend a bungalow. Because it's cool!

There is a "worst-case scenario" for every idea that would argue against it; there are a thousand other things that can happen in life. I prepare for one case and another happens...
The OP is young, looks positively forward, and wants to build a beautiful house. It will probably be a beautiful house.
I’m building again at 60 with stairs in the open-plan living area and a fireplace.
Similar to ... because, in my opinion, it’s stylish that way and I enjoy it every day.
If things don’t go so well someday, we’ll have to manage... and make decisions... that’s life.

We actually still need to think about the shower on the ground floor. Standing in line in the morning before the bathroom can possibly be annoying, yes. We won’t change the steps into the living room anymore; together with the fireplace, it should be a highlight in the house. As I said, you never know what happens in life, but it’s "only" the living room. I just modified the garage a bit using "Paint" and pencil. This way, there would at least be more light from the south in the kitchen area. Of course, there would be less space in front of the garage, but I would accept that compromise. We still have parking spaces. What do you think? :) The windbreak, WC, etc. would then still need to be adjusted.

I would advise from personal experience, I would also implement it in the basement, even if in a simple/inexpensive way.. A lot really changes with growing older (also your own) children and their lifestyle. Sometimes children don’t get along that well, have visitors, one is sick, wants distance, another urgently needs to leave, etc. It simply also offers more privacy and thus brings peace into the house. There are two of us and even we then have 2 bathrooms, one for her and one for him (without a bathtub); not lived rigidly but depending on the daily routine it is comfortable. You yourself also change and suddenly you prefer to sleep in the guest room because someone snores, the other often goes to bed 2 hours later, etc. All things you cannot predict now but you can react to later if you have considered it. We also used to have a family bathroom and a shower bath in the basement. At the first renovation we changed that and made two bathrooms out of the family bathroom, the smaller part became an en suite bathroom, i.e. shower/WC with access from the bedroom. You have an office in the cellar, here too I would at least foresee it if possible, because the use of this room can change in life. The location would be possible since they are one above the other. At that time we were also 30 years old and had 2 children, but we thought rather limited about the future, which is why we later made quite a few alterations; always more difficult with rooms involving water.
