The problem with exhaust air – and that is why it is repeatedly discouraged – is that in a very airtight house, a lot of air is expelled outside. You then have to calculate how much air is present in the rooms and how much fresh air the controlled residential ventilation supplies. Only if everything fits does exhaust air become possible. And the hole in the wall is actually not an argument. With a thermal box, the hole is only present in exhaust air operation because only then does the flap open. With a professionally installed thermal box, every house passes the blower door test (at least if there are no other weak points). In addition, all of us probably have significantly larger holes in the house that are regularly opened, as house and terrace doors are nothing else ;)
