Are you even allowed to build a second house in the garden? In terms of floor area ratio/building coverage ratio? Already checked?

Please finally provide site plans and similar documents, what is so difficult about that?
It’s really no fun talking to a wall...

Actually, I wanted to say: as long as you haven’t "seen" the house here, you can’t say anything definitive at all. Now I have to read that you have often been urged to "bring something to get something." I read something about a wood stove, etc., so one can assume there is a renovation backlog. I’ll quote myself here ;) So what do you expect from a forum that actually should be looked at by an architect or civil engineer? You said that in 2018. Construction costs have nearly doubled in that time, material shortages and lack of skilled labor are not empty words. Ultimately, it’s probably your parents’/mother’s house, and apparently you don’t have the money for your own projects… Have you even talked to the parents about it? You can collect as many ideas here as you want. In the end, though, none of it is feasible if it’s not the owners’ concern.

Thank you for the assessment. We have an appointment in June regarding the renovation of the old building / new building with the architect/energy consultant

Now you (unfortunately) hear from me again. Our beloved great-grandmother passed away some time ago. Slowly, we are starting to feel motivated again to focus on the renovation/refurbishment. The current plan is: Either to convert the existing house (a house with two separate apartments on the ground floor and first floor; attic partly developed, footprint 9x10 meters) into a two-family house OR to demolish and build new. Due to the KFW subsidies for old building renovations per residential unit, it is more likely to be a general renovation with major redesign/alteration/extension. The dream would be to turn the existing house into a semi-detached house with two differently sized halves (one half for grandma, the second half for us as a family of four). This would make everything easier to separate (front door, no shared staircase, garden, etc.). However, this is difficult because of the staircase. Does anyone among you have experience or has already undergone such a conversion or can say if something like this is possible? Currently, we are still wildly pondering and drawing ourselves; an architect has not yet been engaged. Perhaps some of you have recommendations or ideas?

Maybe you could upload the current floor plan etc. now. This has been requested for a long time.
