Hello, we want to extend our house. New living space with a kitchen and dining area is to be created. For this purpose, the existing living/dining room will be reduced in size to create a hallway. Since the current living room will then no longer have a window and the kitchen will be the only natural light source, we had been thinking about a conservatory all along. Especially because of the glass roof. After researching prices and everyday practicality, I am increasingly put off by this. The question, however, is whether enough light might still come into the living room with a normal extension with a tiled roof but a complete window front. I have attached the future plan. Where the kitchen can be seen now, there is currently a terrace. I would be happy if someone could give us tips on whether this would also be feasible with an extension. Thank you very much in advance. Nicole

It is best to first show the floor plans EG Bestand / OG Bestand / EG Soll – in such a way that the location on the property and within the building envelope are also recognizable. Photos of the object and information about the year of construction are also helpful.

Nicole, I had already expressed my concerns to you in the other forum, but you were convinced of your idea. In a glass box, which is nothing else, cooking and eating daily in heat and when it rains you can't watch TV anymore, that's where the fun ends.

It is important that the glass front is high and flat, and as I suggested to you, to plan a wide skylight BEFORE the living room.

The room on the right no longer has direct daylight because this extension was built in front of it, which is lower than yours, about 4.5m. The picture was taken from the kitchen. In front of the kitchen island there is another skylight, parallel to the island, which is not relevant for you. And as I wrote, the roof over the extension is greened.

I would also say that in such cases it is important not to install a dark floor, but to keep it as light as possible, since light surfaces are known to reflect more light. Possibly, window bands can also be installed at the upper end of the walls to the other rooms, as long as the statics are not endangered and there is of course sufficient light influx in the adjacent rooms.

One would also need a sectional view in order to know which ceiling heights are being planned.
