On the topic of roof windows, you really have to weigh the pros and cons. On the one hand, high-quality roof windows are quite expensive and, above all, cleaning them annoyed me a lot. Even if you can rotate and lock them in all directions, water still drips down repeatedly. It’s annoying when you have your bed under the window, even if it’s a waterbed. Then there's the aforementioned pattering when it rains or even hails at night. More than once, I lay down on the couch because I couldn’t sleep under the window even though I had installed the best soundproof windows possible. Another downside is that if you need the windows for ventilation and it snows heavily overnight, you end up with all the snow inside the room/bed. It never got too warm for me in summer either, because the apartment/the roof was insulated well enough. Of course, the windows also have advantages. Since they are angled upwards, you get more light with the same window area, and especially in winter it can be very pleasant to lie under the window when the sun is shining despite the cold temperatures outside. My window was 160 cm high and over 100 cm wide; lying in bed underneath, you can also romantically watch the stars. All in all, however, it was/is too much effort for me (both financially and especially in terms of maintenance), so I no longer wanted roof windows.
