Hello,

we have seen in some show homes children's rooms that had no ceiling and were open up to the roof. There was then a staircase built that led to a kind of mezzanine, on which there was usually a bed. Do you know what costs are associated with building a children's room with an open ceiling? Our daughter of course likes that very much, but we think it will certainly be very expensive. Does anyone of you have such a room?

Regards
Sabine

We had the house built without the attic peak, so the children's rooms are currently open to the ridge beam at the top. We have not had this intermediate level made yet. But: omitting the attic peak initially saved money, so I think that with such a structure, for example with 2 out of 4 rooms having an intermediate level, it might possibly break even. But that again depends on the provider and whether they even do something like that.

For solid houses, I estimate that it could involve an extra charge, as a carpenter would need to be specially involved. With a prefabricated timber frame house, it should be easier to implement. But these are just my personal thoughts.

By the way, we have planned this for later, when the children (currently 2.5 and 0.75) are older.

From my own experience, I know 2 disadvantages. I personally have problems with skylights in the bedroom. For example, during rain there is quite a bit of noise here at times. Furthermore (even if it might sound funny) the gnats and mosquitoes flying around my head at night drive me crazy, and when I turn on the light, they sit at 4.5m height.

We have no skylights in the bedrooms and children's rooms because of the southern orientation and the associated heat exposure.

But the thing with mosquitoes could actually still become interesting, but then the windows will just be locked and never opened . And even with a lower ceiling height, you hardly catch the critters.

By the way, we reduced our roof pitch to 35° so that we only have a maximum height of 3.8m upstairs.

We have a mosquito net (in rectangular form, so not one of those tent things) over the bed. It’s incredibly relaxing when you don’t constantly have flies landing on you. Not to mention the mosquitoes. I would definitely do it that way again. I really like it being open at the top. You can always add the second level later.

With us, it was even included as standard in our house type that all rooms in the attic are open up to the ridge. We have now been living in the house for over two years and find that it is a great sense of space and we are not bothered by the roof windows at all, on the contrary, we find it nice when the rain drums on them (but that is always a matter of taste).
