Well, what should we write - it ultimately depends on you whether you can imagine living there again. I don't see any compromise - for children it is certainly nicer in the village at first. Family is also there. And friends who have lived outside are not as narrow-minded as those who have never left the village their whole life.
11 thousand inhabitants mean it's not just a cow village, but also kindergartens, primary schools, and shopping facilities are available. And everything else is only an hour away by public transport.
The only obstacle is a two-hour daily commute - which you can possibly use for yourself as well. Reading, etc.
I'm not a big city person, I would do it immediately. But I'm not you.

I see the "main problem" less in commuting than in the fact that we might no longer be accustomed to living in rural areas. But you can't really try it out either, since you can't find any decent rental apartments in the area around our hometown - why would you: building is so cheap that it feels like everyone in our circle of acquaintances is somehow building somewhere. Work-from-home days are possible (we already have those). Childcare would actually be better in the countryside than in FfM, since although the distances are greater, both my wife's parents and my parents would be happy to help if needed. Transfers are not an option. I believe even the mayor of our hometown doesn't even get B3.

The property was recently valued at around 180,000 euros.

So 11,000 inhabitants is not a backwater. What should not be there that is in the city? You are in the city every day anyway. Of course, a different club or delivery service every day is not possible. There are also narrow-minded people in the city who never leave their neighborhood. How much contact or anonymity you have is up to you. Somehow I don't understand your concerns.

So I live in a small town with 400 inhabitants and honestly, that's already too much for me. But now to your "problem."

Basically, if I were you, I would do it immediately, but a one-hour commute every day? no way! and with your jobs, you probably aren’t really flexible without taking major losses.

Do you like it in Frankfurt? I would make that a deciding factor. Wouldn't it be an option to buy something in a suburban district? The other property can surely be sold well.

We have also already considered the option of selling the property and acquiring another one near Frankfurt. However, we do not want to build just for the sake of building. We do wonder if we want to put ourselves through the stress. Living in a rental has many advantages. Besides the flexibility, we don't have to worry about anything. If something happens, we call the landlord – with whom we get along very well – and he then takes care of the necessary. Both of us still have a deep-rooted desire to return to our homeland. Maybe we see it in too idealized a way? That is somewhat the concern. At the moment, we might be pushing the thought too much again when we hear birds chirping, thinking about the native forests etc. You know what I mean.

that will probably be very, very difficult, there are virtually no plots of land.

Best regards
