Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask for your basic opinion on this topic.

I am of the (possibly outdated) opinion that this is "the way it should be":

-East/Southeast: Kitchen (the kitchen should not get the daytime heat) as well as pantry/utility room. In my parents' house, it was always great to see the sun in the morning through the kitchen window... however, on the property (see attachment) the east is quite built-up.
-South/Southwest/West: arrangement of dining and living areas
-North: guest toilet, technical room, wardrobe, etc.

Furthermore, children's bedrooms facing south/southwest/west, bathroom/parents rather towards north and east.

I am currently really puzzling over the correct/optimal arrangement on the property (I have attached it for you... 144/5). I want to access from the north (driveway), terrace of course SW.
The question now is whether the kitchen in NW is also conceivable or whether it would be too dark.

I would really appreciate your (basic) assessment.

Thanks!

Have you ever thought about southeast? If well planned and not built up, you also have the evening sun there and it is not directly on the street.

A dimensioned site plan would be good. I always have difficulty imagining size ratios that way.

You should consider how many days a week the east sun can be enjoyed.
For the property, I can well imagine the west side for the kitchen. Also for the terrace. (SW dining area, SE seating area/TV, east utility room).
However, after two summers in the new house, I realize that all sides have their advantages for a terrace.
When it was very hot, we moved to the east terrace in the afternoon. In the south, you can hardly stand to have coffee at over 25 degrees, and then a roof is also useless, since the sun from the west eventually peeks underneath and shines underneath the roof.
Since you can create a nice west garden, shade-giving trees and shrubs would be nice to tuck the terrace in a bit. The evening sun can then be enjoyed while barbecuing.
However, that does not mean I would give up an east window. Terrace doors can be planned on all sides – for light as well as access to the garden or side area.
In this case, the east window can be shifted more to the SE house corner to let the ray of sun, which eventually appears past the neighbor’s house, wander into the room.

Regards Yvonne

I am facing similar considerations and am coming to terms with the idea of overweighting the east side compared to the west side. On the one hand, this is due to the property, on the other hand, the west side is of little use to me because:

[*]the sun hardly reaches it in winter
[*]the west side would have to be shaded in summer
[*]moreover, my feeling is that the summers are getting hotter/muggier and I therefore increasingly enjoy being exposed to the blazing sun less and less.
