I have a semi-detached house 8x10m, partially basemented, because the neighbor already built without a basement. But I only have an eaves height of (I don't even remember) anyway, the upper floor has sloping ceilings starting at 1.2m. With 4 people, we manage the space exactly. Without a basement, it would be unthinkable for us. We would have only been able to fit the technology/utility room with huge restrictions. The attic is only 1.1m high, so not much fits in there either. I don’t want to miss my basement. There are things that don’t have to be economically sensible! It’s comfort. At 30 degrees outside, it’s a chilly 18 degrees in the basement, so you even like to do sports in the basement :) You don’t always have to weigh everything with numbers. If you can afford it, if the above-ground space can’t be extended infinitely, and if the ground conditions allow it, I would always build with a basement. That no junk gets hoarded there requires some self-discipline. But there are also hoarders without a basement  If you are on 2 full floors and maybe still free in the angle of the roof, you can of course create a lot of space above ground.
