I am in the process of renovating our house from 1970 and need to replace the water pipes. My „Gas-Wasser-Mensch“ recommends plastic pipes. Other self-proclaimed „experts“ say that when choosing pipes, one should pay attention to the water hardness. They also say that stainless steel or copper pipes are much better than plastic pipes. I am mainly interested in durability and water quality. Which material is the best considering these aspects?

My friend is also a "Gas-Water-Person" :D. He used plastic pipes for our house and we have very "hard" water. He is familiar with the materials and does not see any significant disadvantages compared to copper or stainless steel. However, metal pipes are considerably more expensive.

Hello Jägermeister,

plastic pipes work well, but if you want the absolute best material (non-corrosive, no reactions, very durable, expensive), you use stainless steel pipes. A middle ground and another good, rather inexpensive solution would be multilayer composite pipes, which are pipes made of plastic and aluminum in multilayer technology; that is, the inner pipe and outer protective layer consist of plastic, while the aluminum pipe in between stiffens it and ensures oxygen tightness.

I can only recommend plastic pipes and they have a long service life. The good thing is, there are different fittings and so the installation is quickly done, which also saves money.

I installed such HT pipes in the house. The advantage here is that they are heat-resistant and acids cannot harm them either. They are also cheaper than lead pipes and easier to work with.

So I also have PVC pipes in the house and have installed them for wastewater on the property. There are many parts like elbows, end caps, reducers, and other shaped parts. All of that can be connected quickly and well.
