We have fighting elements (about 1/3) in the lower part of the windows on the upper floor. Also for exactly the same reasons. What we liked visually as fall protection was unaffordable. The galvanized grids were out of the question.
So the fighting elements came into play. Price-wise they were neutral since the grids were omitted. Another advantage: fixed glazing was then executed according to DIN 18008 as VSG(P4).
This results in the look without disturbing grids. But there is a white band running around, which does not disturb the look at all.
You can clean it from the outside with a ladder. This is not a problem. You don’t have to open the window to get air inside if you have a controlled residential ventilation system, as the OP plans.

how can I imagine that? Is there possibly a photo of it? We are facing the same decision.
