Don't worry - the boomers in our town all did it that way.

Far away was not really my intention. More something nearby that later allows life to be a bit freer if one does not want to spend existence in a condominium.

For example, areas near recreational zones (not hot spots) often show residential possibilities. However, these are rare.

Standard here with us. But everyone knows that because people talk openly about it and are not so secretive. We are all pretty close to each other – there is practically no one who hasn't at least received the land from the family. Some get an additional 80-100k, some more. Of course, there is also the muscle mortgage from relatives. Who nowadays builds entirely from their own independent funds?

I am firmly convinced that there were just as many in the past as there are today.

Why should that no longer be possible? Not everyone builds in the suburbs where 400-500€/sqm is considered normal and the outrageously expensive land takes away any room to breathe. With an affordable plot and a normal-sized house on a slab foundation, quite a lot is still possible. Right now is unfavorable due to the combination of high interest rates and construction costs, but I claim that anyone who signed their contract 1.5 years ago could still build a house completely on their own with an average household net income. Especially if you add a few DIY contributions. Then we are talking about a budget of 450k; sure, then it’s more like Town & Country or Danwood rather than Weberhaus, but until about half a year ago, that could still be managed with a 1500€ installment. Our budget is a bit higher, but I can still manage our build alone even though others here have significantly better incomes. I don't necessarily want a big subsidy from my parents either; just the squabble with the siblings (...actually only my sister...) wouldn’t be worth it if I can avoid it. A nasty additional demand from the general contractor would have to come first for me to accept help.
