What did you do wrong? Basic principles: The coating substrate must be checked for load-bearing capacity and freedom from release agents before each coating process. If this substrate is not sufficient, the unstable coating substrate must be removed, if possible stabilized, and primed in any case. If the substrate is possibly contaminated with release substances, these must be removed (surfactant wash etc., google), but if it is too smooth, roughen or apply an adhesion promoter (plaster and bonding primer). Basta!

Hi, Wegga!

That looks bad - without a professional on site this could become an endless issue. I haven’t quite understood your approach yet. Did you spackle the entire ceiling? Then no gray should appear after the paint flakes off!? Did you prime before painting?

The problem is: now you no longer have a stable ceiling. One can – to avoid extra work – try to repair the damaged spots. If that doesn’t work, the only option would be to spackle everything again.

One thing I’ve definitely learned recently: never save on materials (Faust, Praktiker) – it gets too expensive!

And now a professional has to take a look at the situation – theoretical explanations about sinter layers etc. don’t help from a distance.

Regards,
Tomtom.

No, I did not prime. That was apparently the problem according to my Rohauer. He said he would recommend priming and then painting over it. Definitely no filling. My acquaintance who did the filling (painter) says that if you fill, you don't need to prime. So the two somehow contradict each other. But now many factors come into play as to what could have caused it. Not primed, cheap paint, filler not dry enough.

So strangely enough, where it is peeling off, everything has really come off, both paint and filler. I have now completely sanded down the ceiling that completely fell off and primed it first. I will paint over it again in the next few days with heavily diluted paint.

In the other room, I have thoroughly cleaned and sanded the spots. Here I have primed and am trying to patch it. If that works, everything is fine, and I will proceed the same way with the large ceiling on the ground floor. If that doesn’t work, I will probably have to put a covering on it (Raufaser, plaster or wooden ceiling). I will keep you updated. Thanks so far!

Hi!

I've also been told that you don't HAVE to prime under filler. I always prime. Costs nothing - doesn't hurt!

So - it definitely wasn't the cheap paint - it has other drawbacks. I already warned about the endless work. If filler and paint don't stay on the ceiling - why should cleaning or wallpapering work?

Anything that is somehow dowelled, e.g. panel ceiling, definitely solves the problem - but you have to like it.

I hope the patching work is enough. The only downside is that there is no guarantee that the ceiling areas that have been problem-free so far will remain trouble-free permanently.

Regards,
Tomtom.

Yes, entrusting the matter to a painting company would certainly have been the easiest and safest option - but also the most expensive !!!! It is a task that I, as the builder, felt most capable of handling myself. And still do. Because the money to hire a painting company now simply isn’t available. Therefore, I have to find other solutions.

Of course, in the eyes of a professional, it is patchwork. But in the end, I want to have a white wall or ceiling. And I’m writing this so that others may avoid mistakes here. I am grateful for your tips and do not intend to question your skills and experience.

The repair attempts in the basement room shown above were unfortunately unsuccessful. The repaired spots held well, but other spots peeled off instead. We have now bitten the bullet and scraped off the entire ceiling (including the putty). Now I will try the primer and paint over it again.

So no hard feelings, and thanks again for your help and your comments. Even the critical ones!!

Best, Stephan!
