I doubt that people think like that and make such a rational risk assessment. Those who don’t think about it are probably not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier and therefore aren’t deterred. Those who recognize video surveillance / alarm systems are probably correspondingly “trained” and hardened and still go in. There are no limits to audacity. In some cases, people break in during the day, through an open door, fully aware that someone is at home. Those who are deterred by it are probably only a very small percentage. That’s why I stick with mycraft, passive protection is the only thing that effectively helps to prevent a burglary—and even that doesn’t protect against the aforementioned audacity...I would also feel safer because of that, especially since I’m now looking at it from the other side: I’d have to be a pretty brave and above all experienced burglar to break in despite all the surveillance.
Ringing at a house and finding men there does not immediately prove that these men were doing something else 5 minutes earlier.
