Hello everyone,

I am just at the very beginning of my plan to take on a single-family house as a shell construction. Since I also need a suitable plot of land, I am currently traveling a lot and looking at many options. Now I have found a really nice plot; I like the location and dimensions very much. However, there is a rather deep (3 to 4 meters) row of several closely spaced conifer trees at the back of the property, which are estimated to be 4 to 7 meters high. The trees take up a lot of space on the one hand, but also block a lot of light on the other.

Do I have any way to find out before buying whether I am allowed to cut down the trees? Instead, I would like to plant a hedge or a row of narrow, tall-growing shrubs there. Can someone tell me the best way to proceed now?

Ask the responsible office. But don’t think they will forbid it - maybe they will say that you have to do it in winter.

There are trees that are not allowed to be cut down... I have something like that on the neighboring property... it is a thorn in everyone's side but nothing can be done... As mentioned, it can be found out through the responsible office.

One should not wake sleeping dogs ... You can probably find the tree protection ordinance of your community online. Have a look there!

I once read about a (Gesetzes?)change. According to that, cutting down trees on private property is allowed year-round, provided that no one is nesting in them. However, this is probably a regional regulation.
