That always depends on the area and how well you know the neighbors. In our case (from stories of several builders), the workers/tradespeople are very surprised when the builder shows up frequently. They are not used to that. Especially not when the builder brings food/drinks

We'll see :-)

We also had a topping-out ceremony last week and had thought about whether we should do it for a long time beforehand. We only invited the craftsmen because, in our eyes, it is mainly about the craftsmen. The idea is to thank the tradespeople who have worked so far and not to host a big party for friends and family. Therefore, the time (at our place 4 p.m. after the carpenters finish work) may be early in your case but is certainly not unusual. It is rather rare for craftsmen who were already on the construction site to come again or come after a long day from somewhere else during the week. So after 5-6 p.m. or even on weekends, none of the craftsmen will come to you. Ultimately, the carpenters were there, our architects, and the electrician. I am glad that we held the celebration even on a very small scale. All in all, even without a big party, it is a nice custom. Accordingly, we took time off. We also informed the immediate neighbors, of whom we currently only have two. Only one of the neighbors had time.

That really sounds nice and I would also love it to be that informal!

However, for example, on Fridays from around 12-1 pm no one was on the construction site anymore.

Did you / anyone then have small tokens of appreciation (and especially what?) for the craftsmen? We currently have 3 people on the construction site, and I would like to give them something.

Certainly it depends on the area, but you don't have to know the neighbors beforehand. You just take the opportunity to get to know them better on that day/occasion :)

That is true again :)
I am on the construction site every morning and evening. The workers have a fully stocked beverage fridge at their disposal and are often also provided with lunch or similar. They really are not used to that. It brings me joy, and the workers as well.

I think this is an important thing that we totally messed up... something that still bothers me. Because of Corona, we didn’t contact the workers directly but the company owner because we didn’t know if he was even okay with it (they had already been in quarantine for 14 days). That’s where it stopped and the workers felt overlooked, which was really embarrassing for me. They probably have better things to do than celebrate a topping-out ceremony every week (timber frame construction), but I do find the thanks and recognition important. Since we didn’t know the local customs, we even got a topping wreath ourselves and caused the next confusion (actually, the neighbors tie the topping wreath, which then has to be ‘bought off’ with schnapps).

Long story short: do something nice and personal for the workers at 2:00 pm, even if it’s just a tray of cake & coffee with maybe small gifts. And afterwards you can leave the house open as an opportunity for neighbors and friends to stroll through. It doesn’t have to be elaborate, but I find it rather sad to simply skip it altogether.

At our place, no one is on the construction site on Fridays :) We just spontaneously and quite short notice (4-5 days before) notified/invited everyone and organized the evening in the middle of the week (Tuesday). The weather was suitable, 30-40 people came and everything was relaxed and in a good mood.

Yes, always gladly for good people. Actually, this is usually limited to a box of chocolates (Merci or similar) + an envelope with money at one's own discretion. If the mood on the construction site is good, most don't even want to accept that "out of gratitude"...
