For various reasons, we also were not able to have a proper "planning" of the topping-out ceremony, so it could not take place in the "traditional" form.
Nevertheless, we took the very short-notice opportunity to informally invite relatives, friends, and neighbors to come by the construction site on the said day from 5 pm....
There was no topping-out speech, no wreath..., but a small speech from us in which we were able to express our thanks to the workers, etc. Along with a small buffet, a few standing tables, many drinks and snacks... right in the middle of the street :)
Of course, this is not always possible everywhere, but in our case it was a successful "street party," where those interested could already stroll through the house and get to know half the neighborhood directly and in a relaxed atmosphere.
I can really only recommend it, as it is certainly better than doing "nothing" at all.
It also frees you from the thought of later having to organize a barbecue or similar event. You can still do that later, certainly in a more "informal" atmosphere with already familiar neighbors, etc.
That always depends on the area and how well you know the neighbors. In our case (from stories of several builders), the workers/tradespeople are very surprised when the builder shows up frequently. They are not used to that. Especially not when the builder brings food/drinks
We'll see :-)
