Herti, what would your alternative be? Building like in the 70s and waiting until the oil is gone?

Hello,

with regard to ecological building, I would like to point out the material wood. With a massive modern log house, it is possible to combine the advantages of thermal insulation and heat storage without an insulated exterior facade. Massive wooden houses reduce the concentration of CO² permanently bound and thus continue to contribute to environmental protection. Moisture in the house is reduced by the high moisture absorption and release capability, so that energy-consuming exhaust air systems can be omitted.

I find the combination of well-insulated roof, windows, and floor slab with massive wooden walls ideal and ecological due to direct sustainability.

Best regards

Log cabins are all well and good, but log cabin exterior walls without additional thermal insulation do not meet the strict thermal protection requirements in Germany. In addition, there are shrinkage cracks and joints caused by the construction method, so much for airtightness. Does this frequently described problem not occur in your house?

No, these problems do not exist with us because the walls were glued together in a kiln-dried state from triple-glued beams into entire walls, which were then airtight joined at the corners. This makes the walls nearly settlement-free, and we do not have to consider the annoying 10-12 cm of air above the interior walls.

It is also possible, through a well-insulated floor slab, adequately insulated roof, solar gains, and a modern heating system, e.g., wood pellets, to meet the requirements of the valid energy-saving ordinance.

Best regards

The thermal insulation of the exterior walls would then actually not be sufficient (however one defines that). Can you notice that inside the log house, cool inner surface of the exterior walls or something like that?

The thermal insulation is sufficient because the comfort factor does not depend solely on the U-value as is often portrayed. With this, I can fudge a wall, with cardboard on both sides and a lot of air trapped in plastic bubbles in the middle. However, this overlooks that besides thermal insulation, thermal storage is also necessary. Unfortunately, this fact is often kept quiet by many manufacturers of timber frame houses.

Also, the walls feel absolutely warm and dry even in the geometrically caused thermal bridges, e.g., corners.

I suggest trying out living temporarily in a solid log house so you can form your own opinion.
