Well, it will always be small. I'll take another look at the areas for the terrace and lounge. I don't have a grill and (I think) I don't want one either. Definitely not one that stays permanently on the terrace. The table could be a bit smaller. It is mostly used alone or with two people, with four only when guests are over.

I want to start reading up on terrace/garden design.
I would like to avoid everything looking cramped. I'll keep puzzling around.

I didn't mean to say that nothing can be done there. Your wishes should fit. It's just that on your plan it looks more generous than it actually is. I would really tend more towards terrace planning. You don't want a lot of garden, I understand you don't want lawn either; for 4 or 5 sqm I'd rather have a harmonious perennial bed. Just move the terrace one row of stones deeper. You don't lose anything. There's nothing worse than a table that's too small or a chair that hangs over the flower beds. Browse through brochures, catalogs, or furniture stores, hardware stores. See what you would buy and draw it all in.

What I saw yesterday while flipping through a gardening magazine is something I could well imagine for you too: structuring the garden using (possibly half-high) "hedges". In your case, probably more like the model "planted room dividers". The idea is to distract the view so that you can't see through the entire garden immediately and are not instantly aware of its small size.

Do you want it to be rather clean and tidy, or should it be more like an enchanted garden with many corners to discover? How much time can/are you willing to spend on maintenance?

It can also be quite enchanting. I don't know much about plants yet, but that will get better once I start. I would like to have many herbs and a few useful plants (rhubarb, berries, hazelnut probably won't work because it's too big, fruit trees). I like the trick with the room dividers. Maybe that's why I like height differences so much - you think everything is big and different.

I will take another look at the magazine later and do some reading. But for now: Go to the homepage of "Mein schöner Garten". Then select the item "Urban Gardening" under the menu "Gärtnern" in the top bar. For me, it's about the cover photo - something along those lines would be good. You could design your "Lounge" with decking boards.

Enchanted is good. I almost consider hazelnut a weed. I wonder if there is a dwarf variety? I would definitely use the scale wall and green it. Berries can be used well as a privacy screen. Fruit trees can be mini trees or columns. 2 beds for your kitchen garden. Climbing plants as privacy screens to the left and right, if there is still some space, a bed or various pots with flowering stuff. I would pay attention to an unusual shape there. Like small but wow.
