Hello dear people,

we have a terrace tiled with 40x120cm ceramic tiles, which were glued onto 8cm drain mortar on a 30cm gravel bed.
At that time, I did not know how and where my terrace roof would be placed, so I did not set any extra foundations.
Now I would like to build a terrace roof, but I have two hurdles to overcome:

1.) My house is a prefab house with a timber frame structure, so the terrace roof must be self-supporting
2.) I would prefer not to place the support beams outside the terrace in the lawn.

Now I am wondering whether the tiles with this substructure can bear the load. I have a width of 3.87m, then a projection of 4.61m width and 1.2m depth, and then a setback to 3.87m width again.
The terrace itself is designed exactly like that and is 4m deep at all points.
The roof should cover 3.87m + 4.61m in width and, of course, cover the entire depth of the terrace.
Of course, I would place 2 support beams each at the back against the wall and attach a crossbeam to the house wall on which the crossbeams can rest. The whole thing made of wood and with an acrylic glass roof in double wall with 16mm.

Attached is also a small drawing.

Should that work or am I at risk of having all the tiles break?

Best regards

I wouldn't start such fiddling around. Proper foundations are needed under the supports; you have to consider that there are significant loads on them. If there is wet snow on top, your canopy will be blown away. You can ask the house builder if the canopy can be attached to the house; that worked for us too. But the other supports must have a foundation underneath. The roof should stand on a tile, 8 cm of mortar, and a bit of gravel? No. Cut out the tiles, remove the mortar, then dig, done.

Why does it have to be self-supporting because of the timber frame construction? We are also getting a timber frame and for us the terrace roof will be attached at the level of the intermediate ceiling, there is always a thick beam there anyway, it doesn't get any easier.

Hello, this is what my house builder said. Back then, a [Markisenverstärkung] should have been installed to make it hold, but basically you are right. However, it is quite a long way up to the ceiling, isn't it? I would have to check if the height is suitable and will get back to my house builder.

Further away in which direction? Horizontally you just have to go through the insulation, but that shouldn't be a problem. Vertically it depends on how high your suspended ceiling is, ours will be at 2.85m....

Exactly, it’s about the vertical height and whether I can still get past the roof overhang and the gutter, but I think that shouldn’t be a problem. The height should be about 281 cm from the outside, but I would be able to take that from the drawing, which I hopefully will have soon. Nevertheless, I then have to go away from the house into the tiles, or onto the tiles, but I think it makes sense to really cut out a piece there and then dig down. Is the width of the foundation of interest, or can I cut out 15x15 cm and then somehow drill in there to get the stuff out at 60-80 cm?
