Hello everyone,

unfortunately, we did not install a roller shutter on one window and now want to make up for it. Thanks to permanent home office, the room is now used differently than originally planned and therefore needs darkening for the summer.

The roller shutter box to be installed would be 14x14 cm, the ETICS is 17 cm thick. My idea was to "cut out" this exact 14x14 cm block from the ETICS above the window and then install the roller shutter box in this space. This would leave about 3 cm of ETICS remaining and I would not have to do anything to the facade. In principle, this would be the same setup as with the other roller shutters.

Is this a sensible approach? Or does this cause a bigger problem regarding insulation / thermal bridge? THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE :D

Here is my plan schematically:

I assume the house is finished and plastered? Actually, extend the roller shutter further outward so that there is still some insulation between the roller shutter and the solid wall. Or use an insulated roller shutter box (is that then deeper?). Otherwise, you have a perfect thermal bridge (or better in this case a "cold bridge"). The ETICS on the outside must be stable enough, but 3 cm of remaining ETICS is rather "flimsy" and the plaster will crack... If the plaster is already finished as I assumed above, I hardly believe it is possible to remove the "block" without damaging the plaster. Better ask the plasterer or the installer of the ETICS!

As an idea, perhaps better to use a venetian blind with narrow (60mm) slats? May require less installation depth and thus more remaining insulation thickness inside and outside.

Thank you very much for the reply!

Yes, the house has been finished/plastered for over a year. We are also very annoyed that we didn’t have it done properly from the start… But that can’t be changed now  I would cut out the "block" from underneath; I hope the plaster on the facade won’t be affected. It’s only about 1.00m wide anyway. In addition, I would refill the minimal cavity between the remaining WDVS (about 3cm) and the roller shutter box so that nothing "wobbles."

The "cold bridge" idea basically makes sense to me, but actually all our other roller shutters are installed the same way. Namely as a "plastic box" above the windows, which still has about 1cm insulation plus plaster in front. That would be the same problem with the thermal bridge here, right, or is that a misconception?

True, good idea. Thanks! I just fear it would look odd if all the windows have regular roller shutters and only one suddenly has a venetian blind?!

Isn't a vertical blind an alternative?
