Hello everyone,

we are pretty much done with our planning for the house and garage. One question still remains open. How close should our garage be to the neighbor's property!? Should we place the garage directly at the neighbor's fence or leave a narrow strip (maybe 0.5m!?) for a roof edge or something similar? We are quite uncertain about this. The construction company says it is quite common to build right up to the boundary. But what about moisture, for example? The house is quite unprotected there, isn't it?

Regards, Sebastian

It depends on - what roof shape your garage has - how wide your property is - what the neighbor has built or planned there - how high you estimate the maintenance effort (e.g., painting) - how well you get along with the neighbor - how accurately the location of the boundary is known

1) The garage has no roof overhang on the side. 2) The property allows for a shift of up to 1m away from the neighbor's fence. 3) The neighbor has a fence there. It should be a double rod mesh fence. 4) No idea, that's why the question. 5) We do not know each other yet. 6) Both properties have been surveyed.

Good opportunity to get to know each other. "What do you have planned there?" We imagine it like this and that - how is that for you?" Often a lot is then possible.

I completely agree with you. My only question is, does it make sense to build directly at the fence or is it better to leave a narrow strip free? Purely from the perspective of protection against moisture, dirt, restoration, etc.

I would build up to the boundary on a small plot if there is no overhang or gutter. If you leave the strip, it will become overgrown over time. There is no such thing as "protection" of the wall. On a large plot, I would leave a path to walk through.
