Our house construction project has completed the earthworks and removed a good amount of topsoil. I would estimate about 50 cubic meters. Since we want to level out some unevenness on the property, this is quite helpful. Previously, the property was overgrown with wild grass and weeds; at least with the latter, we are not expecting to see them again.

Is it worth the effort to sift the soil considering the quantity? Does anyone have experience, tips, or useful ideas for economical equipment?

We sieved a similar amount with the Scheppach roller sieve. Took about a week. Whether it's worth it... well it only cost muscle power and some electricity.

We have received screened topsoil. When I compare this to the unscreened soil delivered by one of our other neighbors, I am glad that we invested a bit more. They have lots of stones and a lot of weeds instead of lush grass. For manual work, I would have also referred to the roll screen. If there were still an excavator on site, one could also consider renting a small screening machine.

Our gardener said that sieved topsoil is ultimately just rubbish. After sieving, only dirt remains; the good components are sifted out. And small stones on the surface can also be swept away with a rake before sowing the lawn. I was able to confirm this as well. Some neighbors had to use fertilizer on the sieved soil, while everything grew wonderfully with the unsieved variants. Of course, there was also some weed, but that comes by itself in more rural areas anyway.

Well, if I think about having stones in the lawn again and again for the next 2 years, I would sieve. You have to fertilize the grass anyway.

The top layer should definitely only be sifted soil. It's not worth the hassle with roots and stones that later come to the surface.
In my opinion, sifting yourself is not worth it. Sifted topsoil is simply too cheap.
I mean, we paid around €20 gross per cubic meter including delivery and installation.
