..., that it worked on this one meadow in this one case.
Where the canal was, I didn't know, so nothing with unconsciously moving myself. I was surprised myself, because I neither believe in God nor any other "supernatural things," I'm far too scientifically minded for that.
...
Scientifically minded and dowsing simply don't fit together unfortunately. If one could really rule out subconscious behavior (not so easy... our dog also always notices everything even though I'm almost 100% sure I didn't do anything differently than usual...):
It's the same principle as with Uri Geller. Can Uri Geller really move spoons from TVs in stranger's living rooms to fall down through his mental abilities? Simple statistics... if 500,000 people put a spoon on a weirdly shaped TV... well of course several will fall down with extremely high probability... and exactly those people then call the studio totally excited.
If 100,000 people walk over their construction site with a dowsing rod... well of course several will very likely find the canal. Those for whom it works usually have a strong conviction that it can only be due to their method, and through the "new" media exactly the 5 people meet who succeeded.
But it's just statistics. After all, people do win the lottery sometimes... and the chance is significantly smaller than hitting a canal with a dowsing rod.
