Exactly right. In my opinion, disability insurance for office jobs is unnecessary.
I used to think that too. Then one spring, out of nowhere, I experienced extreme dizziness and tingling, numb, senseless, and sluggish hands. I went mountain biking on Sunday and saw the doctor on Wednesday. Concentrating at work was hardly possible due to the dizziness, and typing was a struggle.
Diagnosis: cervical spine syndrome. C4-C6 pressing on the nerves. Treatable well with physiotherapy, but it will probably stay with me for the rest of my life. After that experience, I was really glad to have taken out disability insurance in my mid-20s for what felt like an extremely high amount of money at the time. Today, the benefit would at least cover the mortgage payment.
What I have learned is that even desk workers have to calculate the risk. Disc problems or something like burnout are no joke. I am incredibly looking forward to the house. There will immediately be height-adjustable desks for my wife and me!
