Rent a house or buy/build? How did you decide?

Because these houses generally don't exist and if they do, they're unbelievably expensive. Around here there's such a house. 280 sqm living space, large plot, view of the lake, pool on the roof. I like it. 8000 EUR cold rent per month. That would be too expensive even for me.

Cookies probably meant exactly that: Because they do not allow compromises in the living experience, single-family home ownership moves into the realm of being worthwhile for them.

When asked "is it worth it?" one initially thinks of the purely economic component, and we have found: Nope.

Is it worth it in terms of living quality? We have found: Yep.

How much does quality of life depend on quality of living, and how much is an increase in living standards worth as a decrease in economic terms?

No one can answer that for someone else with certainty. I can only observe that some who make this calculation misestimate the economic side. For those to whom that is not so important anyway, they sleep all the better in their own house.

Basically what chand says. Or rather, I would put it the other way around: I am not building an absolute dream concert house, but one that I am satisfied with. Such houses can also be rented at realistic prices. I accept compromises in living quality compared to the ideal state in both cases.

If you want to be precise, according to your statement, building it yourself is worthwhile at least in your market segment after all.

I’m not building a dream house at all, but one that I can afford and where I can feel comfortable... although a person is capable of adapting anywhere and feeling comfortable with the right people by their side. Sorry, but people come here from all sorts of regions in Germany and the rent prices, land prices, etc. are just as varied. Do you really want to generalize and say: house is too expensive, rent is cheap? That just doesn’t work, but what works are your own possibilities and a bit of luck.

Go back to page 2.

You: less costs than in a 3-room apartment

Nordlys: paying for a house is an investment.

That's how it started, and both statements are probably utter nonsense..

Whereas Karsten has followed a concept that can still be considered a real investment at best, namely:

Inexpensive, small and single-story built, resulting in a high equity ratio, thus paid off after a short period, therefore rent-free at retirement, and the first expensive renovations can wait a few more years.

This is not comparable to 20-, 25-, or even 30-year financing, where maintenance investments still fall within the repayment period.
