Why? One can also have lived very "modestly" for a long time with a low income - without large surpluses. And then only come to a good income late. Not everyone starts early with the goal - career with money, marriage, house, child & dog. It only becomes problematic because the housing situation has become so tight due to the price explosion that they are forced to take action. "In the past" they could simply have rented something suitable, and everything would have been okay - no thought of ownership.

We obviously don't know enough about the OP, but I saved €2000 every month from €2900 net from the end of my studies until having children. That simply makes €120k in equity in 5 years and not zero. By the way, the place of residence is Munich, so I doubt living in Brandenburg is more expensive... Of course, everyone has to decide for themselves, but I do find that "modest" a bit strange...

.. and you think frugal nearly 70% savings rate with a high income would be realistic in any way? I would describe this as very extreme. With maybe 1200€ net there would be not even 400€ left to live on.

How one is supposed to get by in Munich on €900/month while working is not quite clear to me.

Assuming per month:
Shared flat room (so even as a pregnant woman, since apparently that’s how it was until the birth of the child, just as a side note) about €550
Cell phone contract etc. €20
Mobility costs for public transport €20, since I didn’t take a monthly ticket, but assume that you do almost everything on foot/by bike
The roughest insurance costs (disability/accident/liability) ~€100

So that’s already almost €700. Now you haven’t eaten or drunk anything yet, haven’t done any activities, haven’t bought clothes, let alone gone on vacation.
How that is supposed to work with the remaining ~€200/month really interests me a lot! Honestly!

To then post this as a prime example is kind of harsh...

Easily possible - dumpster diving, bargain shopping, wild camping as a holiday with travel as a hitchhiker, etc.
