So for me, it was out of the question, that's certain. I did not contribute any physical work, but psychological work.

All the detailed planning, checking after every step and at every step whether what was done fits, just yesterday again tried for 2 hours to "save" the staircase. Googling, informing, deciding.....

Paying invoices, correcting, the whole process until we got approval to build (80 times to the municipality, presenting there, submitting the plan many times), half of the house plan (how it stands on the property, distances etc., we did everything ourselves...because you could forget what the experts planned)

Example: We thought we would get natural stones from the tiler. Gradually realized that getting them directly from the quarry is much cheaper....so off to the quarry...choosing, negotiating prices, etc. etc.

This is one of 88 points since buying the property. Before that came the financing, which also took forever.

All of this takes so much time...I count it as own work....

Others don’t worry so much about that and maybe then have more time to help physically.

Others build turnkey and are satisfied with what then stands there.

I invested a lot of time, for which:
- I have a great financing with a great bank
- good insurance and security between me and my partner
- my house stands perfectly in (height) and on the property (distances), others in the building area made it easier for themselves and are now below street level
- most of the big decisions I made suit me, others have built in whatever someone recommended, e.g. controlled residential ventilation
- my house will be anything but run-of-the-mill afterwards and still finished in 9 months construction time, I personally would not have managed that in the same time with help)

Everyone according to their possibilities, I would say.

No such thing as can't.

We bought a house in Saxony-Anhalt back in 2004. Completely on a whim and because of a good opportunity. I am a craftsman but not in this profession. The barn had collapsed by a third. I had no clue about masonry, stones, concrete, or a mini excavator. Inside the barn, the old clay wall was about a meter high.

So first with a shovel, then with an excavator, dug everything out, exposed the foundations, built formwork, poured concrete, and then built up again. 20 meters long and 5 meters high. All 36cm solid wall. The whole fun on weekends. Commuting as well. Friday noon to Saxony-Anhalt, 300km from Nuremberg, put on work clothes and started working until Sunday evening at eight. Then 3 hours back to Nuremberg.
In the morning, back to work at 5 o'clock. For months. Between Christmas and New Year, still did masonry and poured the ring beam with my wife. My wife placed the stones and I lifted them up on a pole.

So you can really do a lot if you want. I would build a bungalow completely by myself today, except for the roof structure.
That's really no big deal. A few stones, a few lintels, a few bags of adhesive and a big angle grinder. For that height, scaffold trestles are enough.
You can do the foundation slab yourself too.

If prices keep rising a bit more like this, I'll start a construction company. You can't earn more than that.
