Do you think so? He is talking about XXL tiles in the format of 1m2 and up. That didn't make me associate that he is looking for a particularly cheap solution.

Compared to Silestone and others, this is the "cheap version." Tiles in that size are available from €50 per square meter. Yesterday at OBI, I saw 90x90cm porcelain stoneware tiles with a concrete look for a mere €17.99 – they were on sale in our area.

With a countertop, you really have to work with the true XXL tiles (320 x160) and not with the pseudo XXL tiles like 90 x 90 or 120 x 120. This way, you usually have the same joints/connections as with natural stone or ceramic slabs. And therefore, this countertop will certainly not be cheap.

In southern countries, many countertops are still tiled; starting from mosaic size upwards. That works well, you just have to like it. Nowadays, everything is supposed to be as seamless as possible; however, that is not necessary.

Of course, it is not necessary - but comfortable. A mosaic countertop is really pointless, as it is hardly cleanable. I think that the development towards seamlessness is not only about design but much more about practicality. Grout lines are simply harder to clean than a flat, flush surface. The same applies to the cooktop.
