Hello Katja, that is an interesting idea. Indeed, we are building with a basement. Of course, we would like it if we could have a nice garage aligned, but it comes with the fact that we would lose space in the south. Possibly there is the way that we build a tool shed and have an enclosed area. I have to think about it! Thanks for the info.

Yep, if you look at the carports, you will quickly notice that they often have a shed attached at the rear.

I am getting back in touch. Does anyone see an alternative arrangement of the garages/carports that we haven't considered and that brings a different approach? Why do I ask? The remaining garden seems to be about 9x20m, and maybe there are other possibilities.

All ideas are very welcome

My approach to simply ensure that the main thing remains the main thing is: first only position the house and then give the cars whatever is left over. The dog is a family member, but the car is a utility item. And it seems to me that the notion, undeservedly widespread, that the best garden is the one whose area is compactly accumulated.

Beyond a certain size of the subareas, it no longer matters, but with the "small" plots, which is what it's always about here, it is natural that a larger contiguous area has more "sun" in the middle than many small areas. Hedges, trees, one's own and neighboring buildings: at the edge there is always only shade. Small areas proportionally consist more of "edges."

That is true, but even without a park-sized plot, the "free-standing" of a house is less pronounced if the side building widths are reduced to mere broom-clearances. With all due understanding for the desire to get the largest possible sunbathing landing spot for the price of the plot: all four cardinal directions are beautiful – for example, the sun rises in the east – God did not create only the south. In this respect, I am trying here to open eyes a bit against the mainstream of dividing plots into the three area classes house footprint, terrace, and the nasty price driver distance area. The world is not just gray/green.
