Well, with ceiling. Which tenant actually knows the ceiling. You really have to have lived there a long time for there to be an obligation derived from it

Well, 40€ all-in yes.

For comparison, the serious offer from a "real professional" in matters like how to cheat the most: 350sqm * 7€ net + 5x40€ net for fixing doors. Had to shake my head first and then laugh!

The actual work is the taping beforehand or, if you don't do that, the cleaning afterwards. It's best to do the taping yourself; a student who does it flawlessly for 10 euros/hour probably doesn't exist. Or you either like cleaning or pay someone again for it.

I would do it myself (or have done so in my previous apartments; last time just touch-ups, that was enough and worked without taping).

If necessary, you can also do a preliminary inspection with the landlord. If they insist on renovation, you can also ask if you can "buy yourself out." You then have to weigh that.

Thank you for your answers.

So, we already understand that painting ourselves would basically be the cheapest option :) Our concern is to save time. The move to our new house will be tightly scheduled at the end of a month, but we want to be out by then so we don’t have to pay rent for another month.

We are both working and have two small children and no grandparents nearby. Something like "painting and renovating the apartment" is a not to be underestimated time factor, especially since we still have quite a bit of renovation to do in the new house together in a short amount of time.

And yes, we will have to paint and renovate. We have lived here for over 5 years, we painted the apartment ourselves and otherwise took it as the first tenant, there are no strict deadlines and we have always had a good relationship with the landlord. Accordingly, we will not try to find any reason to avoid doing anything here, that’s not our style.

We thought that if we buy materials in the mid-range segment ourselves and then find two students to do the work, it would be financially manageable...

That we might agree with the next tenant that they do some painting and we give them money or materials is also an option. But then again the question arises: What do we give them?

Then I would arrange with the landlord that he keeps part of the deposit. It is easier for you.

Honestly?

As long as the rental agreement does not say anything about move-out renovations, I would close the drill holes, possibly repair smaller things, and hand over the apartment swept clean and possibly mopped.
