hello, I have just bought a wood stove and now I want to connect it to the chimney. I have a terraced house with a gas heating system, everything goes through one chimney shaft. Do I need to consider anything or can I simply drill the flue?

Hello, you should definitely first ask the chimney builder and the chimney sweep. Because if I am correctly informed, it is not possible to connect another stove to a chimney that has already been designed for gas. This has to do with the cross-section of the chimney. Besides, the pipe is only designed for the exhaust gases of gas !!

Hi, that's true, you cannot simply connect a wood stove to a chimney that was built for a gas heating system. For wood firing, the chimney must have a large cross-section, for gas a small one. If it is too small, it may push the exhaust gases back into the house and that can be fatal !!!!

It is absolutely not allowed to connect a wood stove to a chimney with other uses (no matter whether gas or oil) in addition.
If you no longer have an additional chimney, or want to install one, then the stove will no longer work. In this case, perhaps return or sell it. Which of course raises the question of why you did not clarify this before buying? That would be obvious before spending the money on it, wouldn’t it?
Furthermore, it depends on how many kW heating power the stove has and on the effective draft height up to the roof outlet. Only then can the optimal cross-section be specified or determined.

Bauline is completely right with what he writes. You cannot just connect any stove to a chimney. You can only try to return the thing and hope that you get all the money back. In cases like this, you should always ask the [Kaminkehrer] beforehand.
