Now I understand! We hadn’t considered a shed roof yet, it might be difficult with the heights. As Maria already said, returns are not so unusual for us (my immediate neighbor has something like that, for example).

Description is post no. 5 in "Hausbau aktuell Trends und Neuheiten..." from July 18.

It is not about clear concepts of the house or the rooms, but a description of how you want to live, what is important. For example, we wanted to achieve a symbiosis of "inside" and "outside" when it is a bit warmer. Few traffic routes and little storage space (to reduce ourselves with all our stuff). Sunlight upon waking up, the boys should be able to become independent and stay as long as they want, but at the same time build and learn a self-responsible life. We thought that living in one room has charm and we really enjoy cooking. Indoor healthiness is important to us and that the house produces more energy than it consumes. That the forest on the property should serve as a CO2-neutral energy source. That the house should fit in... And so on. This is not a limitation for the architect, but a challenge, a creative task. Actually a dream for an architect.

Exactly, that’s how you do it "right": the professional then tries to consider all suggestions, while the DIY planner tends more to squeeze in all suggestions. The very closest neighbor is actually yourselves, with the existing buildings to be preserved next door. What do those even look like?

the big house next door where we currently live consists of two residential units, i.e. living and practice, and is rented out; we will continue to use the front garage, we would probably have to build a carport for the tenant then

I meant more the appearance, regarding the insertion.

Well, the other house is from 1952.. but due to the rather conservative construction style, the new one will fit in the picture. If we were allowed, we would build something different (e.g. Wiederkehr with a flat roof, greenable, usable as a terrace). Unfortunately, not feasible in this corner of Bavaria...
