Is there actually such a thing as facade paint and roof shingles with signs of aging? Like following the motto "looking like nothing"?

There are also neighborhoods where people like to do some work, so the noise might actually be rather background noise, especially during the day.
In that case, the absolute lack of visibility of the property might need to be reassessed.

That is clear, but both involve property. What I meant was that burglary is rightly punished severely, but, for example, all kinds of bodily injury offenses are not. If someone hits me with a club or a chain, stabs me with a knife in the thigh or even in the abdomen, without verifiable intent to kill, the punishment is generally significantly lower. Mostly, break-ins occur when no one is home, and a prepared escape route is used to run away if someone comes home. However, the terrible feeling of invasion of privacy usually remains afterward. Hopefully the friends can cope with that. In my circle of acquaintances, at a shop in the pedestrian zone, a large safe was cut open and welded at night, and absolutely no one reported it. Unfortunately, that was already the case before airtight houses existed.

My first question would be whether anyone still lives there at all? And the second, how loud is it really? Ok, you’d probably hear the grinder, but a welding machine? Can you hear that through two house walls?

Well, I would definitely look out the window if someone was grinding at night... And if it’s in a store, I would definitely call the police.

In this case, it was actually Christmas Day. Friends had gone to visit relatives for a few hours in the afternoon (2-6 pm), during which time it had already happened. We are simply outraged by the "audacity," since the break-in area is currently really on a silver platter and can be easily seen from all the houses in the neighborhood. That the burglars even dare to work there so long and presumably loudly, and clear out the place. Not really much of value this time either, even perfume (high-quality but opened/used) was taken. Curious. The residents are of course struggling with it and have been waiting for two months for replacement delivery of the patio door and repair of the window :(

Yes, the psychological aspect is really much more relevant. Friends of mine had lived in a ground-floor rental apartment with a terrace facing the courtyard and once left the terrace door slightly open in summer. Only the next morning did they realize that someone had apparently entered through the door and then ran off again. The damage was very minor (I think a tablet?), but the feeling afterward! Christmas Day is anyway a day when many people are not at home. According to the description, this really sounds like total opportunistic burglars. First, they had no idea; second, no great loot. Maybe they were even teenagers from the neighborhood? They probably always knocked over the mobile toilet from GÜ at my place too. Now I have ordered a toilet box of my own. I fastened it with tension straps. So far, it’s still standing...

Exactly. And fitting to that, there’s the "Clochard look" for the homeowner, although that has also changed when properly groomed managers want to look like "dirty boys" in private. There’s such an embarrassing picture of our former foreign minister :D. There are stupid break-ins in kindergartens, schools, churches, musty basements... simply everything and much of it makes no sense at all, which is why the sole approach using one’s own logic doesn’t necessarily lead to the desired success. At night, you really hear everything and it’s much more noticeable than during the day. Welding was such a big deal, you can see it from outside, the grinder screeches in your ears, you have to be that brazen as a burglar. It is actually surprising that such loud break-ins or burglars in general are not reported more often while breaking in. Maybe it’s also because walkers often have headphones on :D:D:D The best measure would therefore be to clone you and place you in every settlement. Joking aside, maybe it’s at least partly because people live more self-centered nowadays and the sense of community has declined. More and more technology, self-arming, etc. definitely does not lead to lasting success; like elsewhere, there is no perfect solution; every situation is different and every affected person feels it differently.
