Hi,

I wanted to make myself some muesli this morning and was horrified to find that there are moths inside. Where do they come from and, even more importantly, how do I get them out of the kitchen again?

Thanks, I hope you can help

Helen

Maybe in the evening and morning the light is on in your kitchen? That attracts the moths :D otherwise you could cover your bowl with something so that nothing can fly in

We had that already, it was a huge drama for us.

They also settled in our cereal and laid their larvae there. Once they moved out, they wandered into other foods. We were nicely on vacation during that time and didn’t notice anything. The maggots then like to roam around everywhere as loners. Up on the ceiling and especially along the corners. That was really bad.

The end of the story:
- everything that wasn’t tightly sealed was packed unchecked into a bag and quickly disposed of
- everything that was still sealed but made of cardboard or plastic packaging was meticulously checked for a 2mm hole somewhere that the moths had eaten through and often used to get in
- since then, opened foods are only stored in hard plastic containers as well as glass containers and preserving jars. Cereal after opening only in suitable containers that are well sealed
- several moth traps set up, every moth destroyed immediately and checked every morning and evening if anything was still moving somewhere
- took advantage of the empty cabinets and thoroughly cleaned everything from the inside again

The basic statement may be correct, but to talk about "most of the time" here and generally mean food but mainly refer to muesli and other food does not do justice to the matter.

In the organic store, most products are packaged. Vegetables etc. are not packaged but you also look at them, it’s like at the market, I have never had any bugs in them. And hopefully, the muesli in the regular supermarket is also not sprayed after harvest, because moths do not get in before that.

Your statement sounds a bit like "Erdbeerkäse" :D

Yeah, stop it with me... I've had my own household for 11 years, never packed anything extensively and never had food moths. Until recently when I saw them crawling in dried apple slices. Immediately threw away everything that wasn't already packed in moth-proof containers by chance (screw jars are not moth-proof! Only airtight jars with rubber seals or airtight containers made of hard plastic and glass). Emptied the entire kitchen, cleaned it with vinegar water, blew everything hot with a hairdryer – those were fun 5 hours. The critters have long development cycles... 9-12 weeks. Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean you don’t have them anymore. For control, there’s a trap hanging here. But they only attract the males and the females keep laying their eggs diligently. So with us, everything (and I really mean everything that could theoretically interest them and the list is very long!) goes into the mentioned secure containers that I bought for a lot of money (but better than constantly throwing everything away.. I know people who haven’t gotten rid of their infestation for almost 3 years). The rest gets frozen or placed in the fridge shortly before consumption. For several weeks, we haven’t had any animals in the traps, but we’ll see if something still hatches somewhere. Unfortunately, small crumbs are enough to feed the larvae. And no kitchen is crumb-free.

Very annoying topic.

Hello

yes, the pantry moth. you can get it quickly.
With me, they were in the wheat bran. Every morning (besides the normal breakfast) I take 5 heaping tablespoons as fiber. I always had them in paper bags (tightly packed) from the health food store. At some point, I noticed there were clumps inside. Checked and the larvae had already pupated. I had already eaten some bags. Since I have eaten insects and all kinds of things (snakes, rats, etc.) before, it bothered me less. My wife wanted those critters out of the house. So I went to the health food store with the (sealed) bags for an exchange. They told me that this was not a defect and I would not get my money back. Well, now I buy my wheat bran at the supermarket. Packaged in plastic and at a third of the price.
Many years ago, something similar happened to me with chocolate from Aldi. The one with the whole hazelnuts. I eat them while watching TV. At some point, I noticed little droppings. When I checked, the nuts were infiltrated by worms. After I called Aldi the next day, someone came by quickly. With a whole box of sweets to prove to me that not all products have worms inside.
That was okay.
