Hello everyone,

Are there any recommendations on whether and which types of wood can be mixed in the house? What matches visually and what definitely does not. Or is it completely a matter of taste? We are considering whether we should go for a solid laminated wood ceiling (softwood, exact type currently unknown). So far, an oak floor (wood colors) is planned in the living area. The staircase is made of beech wood, and the hallway will probably be tiled. Are there any no-gos when mixing wood types, or does it also depend on whether the woods are glazed or similar?

Thank you very much

That's a matter of taste like everything visual. However, all the no-gos that are conceivable according to my taste are included in your planning [emoji3]

Above all, floor and ceiling made of wood I consider quite daring and should be precisely matched to the architecture of the house. If your floor is oak, why then the staircase beech? Do you like that? If you love rustic charm with wooden ceilings, why tiles with it?

You have to like it, that's what matters. What good is it to you if others don't find it nice? But remember that a colored blanket can feel very oppressive.

The visible solid wood ceiling was only proposed later by the carpenter. So far, nothing is properly fixed. We have basically already decided on the beech staircase. An oak staircase would mean quite a bit of an additional cost. The staircase is in the hallway and separated from the living area by a door. And the hallway is not supposed to have a wooden floor either. So there would always be only 2 types of wood mixed. Living area: (probably spruce on the ceiling and oak floor). Hallway: beech staircase and spruce ceiling. I wonder whether all of this fits together, hence this topic. Even though it has already been mentioned here that it is a matter of taste. The ceiling could also be whitewashed so that the grain only shows through slightly.

It really depends on your style of furnishing. How is the rest of the house furnished, do you also have wooden furniture there, more country style?

Best regards

We faced the same problem and for us, the main factors for the selection were price and ease of handling. We have a beam ceiling made of spruce, which we had glazed colorless so that it stays light. In the hallway, there are lightly textured, light tiles and a staircase made of core beech. I think you can see that very well.

In the living-dining area, however, we have limed oak as the flooring. The reason here was quite simply the stability and liveliness of the floor. We just liked the covering and it is really indestructible.

Originally, we actually wanted doors also in limed oak, but they would have cost twice as much, so they were painted and replaced with beech. And especially with our children, that was a good decision.

In other words: if you will, we took all the no-gos, but: we like it. Only the old furniture (e.g. living room wall unit in simple beech) partially does not fit into the overall picture, but it will be thrown out eventually.
