I feared that and it is a significant amount. The appearance and size almost exactly match my expectations...

Thank you very much for your response!!

We have about 5m driveway width, but if you subtract posts, possible wall to the neighbor, etc., I am not sure whether an additional door for passing through would reduce the actual gate too much, or if the passage width would become too narrow. I lack a bit of the imagination there... Of course, a car has a maximum width of 2.55m, but still, I find it difficult to estimate.

The reality for us is that we usually drive through while the gate is still opening and a good meter is still in the driveway. Then we have to press twice, first to stop it and then to close it again. If it is not expected that anything oversized needs to enter there, a 3-meter-wide gate is more than enough. We had to have 4.20m because we had to consider the turning radius for the fire department access (parts of the house are >50m from the street).

On the other hand, it probably does not make much difference in terms of cost whether the gate panel is wider or an identical, fixed part is installed. Every post needs a foundation, which costs extra again.

When placing the gate, optionally consider locally applicable regulations for emergency access routes. Depending on the location of the house, deliveries through the gate are desirable. If the gate is positioned in such a way that some maneuvering is required to pass through, this is relevant for the required width.

Thanks hampshire! While reading #26, I already noted down "fire department access & co" :). But still, thanks for the hint, in our case it might actually be relevant! Do you have a specific minimum width in mind? (In front of the planned 5m gate, we still have a 5m driveway that belongs to us, before that there is actually a 90° turn into the actual street, which is only slightly over 3m wide and has a slope.)

(OT: I have really been reading sometimes lengthy threads here for weeks! You have a very pleasant manner, thanks for your many great answers in the forum, people like you make a forum much more enjoyable!)

Experiences regarding gate width, 2.2m with Beetle, Trabbi ok, 3m with car, Bulli ok, 3.5m with motorhome tight, 4m+ everything easy. Berlin fire department does not drive through, everything with hoses from the street (rear buildings, courtyards)

The 10 minutes were over faster than expected, my explanation of the driveway situation is awful :).

I'll try again.

In front of the intended 5m gate, we still have 5m of driveway that belongs to us, the actual street is basically shaped like a T set at a 90° angle. However, this street is only about 3m wide and has a embankment opposite our driveway. There is very little space for maneuvering, but I think once you are on our 5m in front of the gate, the worst is behind you :).
