We have an expansion joint running across the laying pattern (originally no tiles were planned) and I was very afraid that it would look terrible.
If the tiler works precisely and the colors are matched, however, it does not seriously bother me. At least not me, but that might be a matter of taste!

Thank you for the photo. It really looks completely undramatic, I would have expected worse. Then it will probably be like this for us: the transition between hallway/living room will have this look. Should be OK!

Should the decoupling mat (reinforcement fabric?) be laid over the entire surface or only in the expansion joint area?

Thank you for the various feedback.

In which direction would you lay the wood-look tiles on the ground floor? What looks better?

That depends on the light, so for you, the image above then the laying direction perpendicular to it, of course also depending on the tile format, with 60x60 it should probably not matter. That would probably also do the room good and help it gain optical width.

Yes, for the sake of the visual effect, I would not want any longitudinal seams that would stretch the space even more. So I would also be in favor of crosswise.
