After intensive discussions, we have now decided against an L-shaped kitchen unit. This means that we now have two different options for the kitchen island. What is your opinion on the two variants? What advantages and disadvantages do you see for each?
Info:
- from the hallway into the room there is no door, only a 2m passage with lintel
- dining table size in the small variant 2m, medium variant 3m, long variant 4.5-5m
- distance between the kitchen unit and island 0.95m
- the window on the right side of the plan should not be moved, terrace doors could be moved if absolutely necessary
- layout of the kitchen unit from top to bottom: oven, stove, dishwasher, sink, freezer, refrigerator
Why the kitchen island at all?
1. More workspace
2. Storage space is needed
3. At least a partial separation of the kitchen and the rest of the room
Variant 1 - island on the top of the plan:
- dining table is closer to the windows, which might be nicer
- the workspace is far from the refrigerator, sink, and trash can and might therefore not be used as a workspace
- the first thing you see when coming from the hallway is the kitchen island (which I don’t find very inviting)
- you have plenty of space when entering the room
- table/chairs partially block the terrace doors or make opening and passing through impractical
Variant 3 - island on the bottom of the plan:
- the table seems more accessible to me, also because of the constant opening to the hallway
- dining table approx. 2.5m away from the terrace doors
- possibility to set up a very long table for celebrations
