Good day everyone,

I am very pleased to have found this forum and hope that you can help me. In my [EG] there is a problem with the tiles. In two places, the grout has broken out.

The fundamental problem seems to be that the expansion joint was not correctly installed years ago, and the pensioner lacks the money for a complete professional renovation and the installation of new flooring.

Now the question. What can be done in such a situation to at least prevent the problem from expanding and the tiles from coming loose?

Will new grout help, at least temporarily? Or is it advisable to fill everything with Ottoseal S34?

I hope for a tip here. I and we are aware that this will only help temporarily and that new grout might break out again. But more time is needed until possibly time and money are available for a complete renovation.

Thank you in advance for your help

The tile is glued underneath and is not held by the joint. As a DIYer, I would remove everything that is loose and then professionally apply new grout. That shouldn't be rocket science. The only thing a bit more difficult is to match the correct tone (old dark grout color to the new one). But that's just how it is.

Well, first of all, according to the photo, this is by no means a movement joint, nor a field boundary joint, but simply a standard joint in a ceramic covering with partially broken-out joint filler material.
Here - seriously speaking - there is no real "problem area" in flooring technology to be seen.
As soon as the fragments in the joint have been scraped out or removed with a pointed awl, the joint opening can be resealed with any color-matched filler.
Ideally with a cement-based joint compound, although there will be slight color deviations from the old joint material here.
However, this will really not be a problem.
And if no one objects to my recommendation to possibly use a silicone material here as well:
Yes, Ottoseal S34 would also serve its purpose in case of minor breakouts ...
First tape off the edges with painter’s tape, apply the filler, and then carefully remove the tape immediately, pulling it off vertically to the adhesive axis.
