Is the neighbor's ventilation system set too high and therefore too loud?

Now seriously. If my neighbor gave me a strange look when I turned off my controlled residential ventilation and wrote me a letter saying I should ventilate but with a lower volume flow... I wouldn't know if I would react as coolly as your neighbor apparently does.

As we know from the garden thread, noises and their volume are perceived very subjectively. However, 35 dB to 40 dB are within the range of a refrigerator or dishwasher.

35 dB is basically the noise level when you sit in a room with closed windows. That means the wind in the leaves is louder. I believe if you couldn't see the ventilation nozzle at all, you would never have noticed it. It's all in your head.

Noise is not just noise. We perceive some as more annoying than others. And I think that the rustling of leaves evokes a different sensation than the noise of a ventilation system.

And yes: of course the mind plays a role. Because drawing conclusions from sound pressure level to perceived sensation is only possible to a limited extent. Some people are more sensitive to noise than others. Some are less bothered by cold, others by heat. Still, I think I should be able to talk to my neighbor. After all, we are all somewhat civilized.

And no: I didn’t see the duct and then look for a noise ;)

I kindly ask for constructive contributions on the topic. Thank you!

I just did a very amateurish measurement with my phone and got 58-59db directly at the grille at 200cbm nominal ventilation. If I step back 5-6m, you can no longer hear the noise. How did you measure the 35db, at what distance, and how do you want to classify it? During the specified daytime hours, practically everything in your environment is louder than 35db. Disclaimer, now comes my personal opinion. I always find it, let's say cautiously, difficult when someone wants to turn their own problems into those of others.

Thanks for drifting away from technical solutions like silencers to "it's not so bad," "I can't hear anything at 6m distance," "it's just in the head"; actually: the noise is gone. Saved a lot of money ;)

I'm also going to let my lawn mowing robot run at night soon; it's not that loud; only 59 db(A) on the lawn mower. Further away it's less anyway. And I like the sound. It doesn't matter how my neighbors perceive it... NO, after a neighbor asked me to run it a bit less or at different times, I also reprogrammed it in coordination with him.
