Is the garage driveway too steep?

10% is already noticeably felt when driving, but it is not a problem for vehicles that do not have an extreme departure angle. On ice and snow, it can sometimes become slippery. The garage builder may point out that a 10% slope can unintentionally keep a car in motion on ice and snow. That is indeed the case.

Yes, it’s easily doable, I’m used to much steeper slopes from previous apartments and could even send you pictures. If it gets really steep, some practice is needed, especially with a manual transmission. But as it once said so nicely in a driving instruction for a holiday home: Engage first gear and boldly drive up the hill.... Limitations with steep slopes, however, as partly already mentioned: With snow and ice you have to keep clearing constantly to avoid slipping when driving in. With low ground clearance of a car, you have to cut the driveway diagonally on the side, which requires some practice. With all-wheel drive, a tire often ends up hanging in the air. Reversing into the garage can be a challenge for drivers and the clutch (e.g. when loading heavy items). Turning vehicles tend to scrape the underside and the exhaust leaves deep scratches in the surface. And the driveway is reluctantly used as additional parking space. Conclusion: It’s not optimal, but you can live very well with it once you get used to it.

Hi,

and your kids will love speeding down there with the Bobbycar....

It will indeed get quite steep. Of the 9 m, some sections might still be deducted for flat areas. (You don't want to have a 10% slope directly by the garage, but will start with 5 degrees and then get steeper. The same at the bottom. That way, you'll have more than 10% in the middle at times.
You won't be able to get the Lambo in and out there without scraping, and it could be tight even for some regular cars. There are quite a few that hang pretty low in the front.

Best regards,

Andreas

Since the garage is freestanding, what speaks against setting it a bit lower? Maybe you can even use the excavation material generated in the process at another spot on the property for terrain modeling.

It would be a bit more relaxed if you could also park the cars in front of the garage without the risk of them moving downhill due to a hastily engaged handbrake and causing an accident. Also, to repair a bicycle or use the yard differently (is that still done? oops), it would be nicer to be able to use a partly flat surface.
So I would also set the garage a bit deeper. Is there a problem with that anywhere?
