Dear community,

I am currently dealing with the use of a photovoltaic system in our upcoming new construction project. It will probably come down to the classic combination of an air heat pump and photovoltaic system (including storage).

In a book, I am now reading about quite exciting application fields and wondered whether the control systems of photovoltaic systems are really that smart.

The following application fields (with the use of a power storage system) I would find very good for our house:
- Combination of heat pump + photovoltaic
- Heating of pool
- Electric vehicle - wallbox

Control example: Charge car at night only if stored electricity is still available. Heat pool only during the day with pure solar energy. Etc.

What does reality look like? Which logics would you implement and how?

Thank you!

There are countless possibilities. Ultimately, it depends on what is available in your house and what the mentioned devices can do on their own. Heat pump with SmartGrid? Feed-in meter with IR interface or data output? Bus system in the house with logic? Inverter with Modbus interface? HomeManager or similar control components for photovoltaics? Switchable sockets/connections for the pool heating? Control options of the wallbox?

-> Combination heat pump + photovoltaic ... is no problem if you find people for both trades who will implement YOUR wishes together with you. Technically really manageable (un)complex. Before purchase, make sure that the devices (especially the heat pump) have a suitable control input. -> Electric vehicle - wallbox Control example: Charge car at night only when stored power is still available. Heat pool only during the day with pure solar energy. Etc. ... That is of course nonsense, I would never do it that way. Because the home battery will, if at all, only provide the power needed by the house at night. Everything else is neither efficient nor technically possible or reasonably affordable. Average car battery probably 45-50KWh, affordable battery for photovoltaic approx. 4-10KWh. You see, there is a small discrepancy there. Charge the car best during the day with pure surplus power, better wallboxes can do that (SMA, to a limited extent also the Zappi and many others probably also). ... The energy demand of a small pool is so large that the photovoltaic system will not really be able to achieve much, unless you get 30KWp or more on the roof? For that, possibly buy a suitable heat pump for the pool separately. However, especially with all the other needed or comfortable gimmicks, the pool will become very expensive.

I see. If you have the appropriate expertise, quite a bit is possible. My expectations are certainly not astronomical. However, I find it quite challenging as a prospective builder to look at the project holistically. We will now start the detailed construction planning with a general contractor. It feels like there is strong silo thinking in such a project. Everyone is interested in their own trade but little in the interaction with other components.

I have little to add to that. All plausible remarks that I will take into account. I cannot yet say how many kWp our roof will provide.

These are still foreign concepts to me. I have little knowledge of these specific technologies so far.

It will make you very happy "in the long run" if you no longer consider the roof and the photovoltaic system separately from now on. A few centimeters more roof overhang, a skylight slightly shifted, mounting the satellite system directly on the facade, the right roof covering (metal), commissioning the carpenter at the same time with the substructure - many points that make the photovoltaic system cheaper and larger without much effort. And size is the only thing that matters. As long as you don't have one, you can't imagine how little such a thing produces when there are clouds. So don't be afraid of 30, 40, 50 kWp - it's worth it! PS: I wouldn't buy a storage system at the moment, amortization is practically impossible. Better to retrofit when prices have dropped by 60%.

if you can program all that yourself, it's no problem at all. But try to find a craftsman who does that for different trades and then again in a few years when something doesn't work or needs to be changed. For that reason, my electric boiler and solar boiler are controlled by the best control system in the world; my right hand
